PNG Conjoined Twins Flown to Sydney for Urgent Life-Saving Treatment

Papua New Guinea’s conjoined twins, Tom and Sawong, were airlifted from Port Moresby to Sydney yesterday afternoon after one of the infants experienced a sudden decline in health. The seven-week-old twins had been under care at Paradise Private Hospital for the past three weeks.

Born in Morobe Province on 9 October 2025, the boys are joined at the lower abdomen and share vital organs. Their condition had been closely monitored by medical teams in Lae and Port Moresby, with the support of the MAMA Foundation and Manolos Aviation under the leadership of Captain Jürgen Ruh.

The decision for an emergency evacuation came after Tom developed worrying swelling earlier in the week, prompting specialists to call for immediate transfer to a facility with advanced resources. A specialized team from the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network assisted in the medevac operation.

Captain Ruh said the twins had initially been accepted for treatment at a hospital in Europe, but delays in securing a humanitarian visa meant they needed to act quickly. “I am very pleased to report that the conjoined twins were airlifted today from Port Moresby to Sydney. Whilst the hospital in Europe accepted the twins under the Europe humanitarian Visa, inclusive of free medical care, we needed to activate an emergency flight to Australia. On Sunday, Tom deteriorated a little, including swelling of the skin,” he said.

He acknowledged the efforts of local clinicians, adding that their intervention kept the infants stable long enough for the transfer to take place. Upon arrival in Sydney, the twins will undergo imaging and assessment before a surgical plan is determined. Their parents, Kevin and Fatima, expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the life-saving mission, saying, “We needed to move him quickly to a facility with better resources.”
