PNG Strengthens Ties with South Korea as KOICA Office Set for Return

Papua New Guinea’s deepening diplomatic relationship with South Korea is set for another boost next year, with plans underway to re-establish the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) office in Port Moresby. The move follows a high-level discussion between Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko and Korean Ambassador His Excellency Jongho Choi.

Ambassador Choi visited the minister ahead of preparations for the 6th South Korea–Pacific Island Countries Ministerial Meeting in Seoul. The meeting will see Minister Tkatchenko sign a new framework agreement on grant aid with his South Korean counterpart, His Excellency Cho Hyun.

According to the minister, work is already in progress to reopen the KOICA office, with a representative currently in Port Moresby. The renewed presence of KOICA is expected to create expanded pathways for economic cooperation, particularly in infrastructure, health, education and skills training.

Ambassador Choi also confirmed that a reciprocal visa waiver agreement for diplomatic and official passport holders is awaiting parliamentary ratification. He further advised that South Korean lawmakers are scheduled for an official visit to PNG later this year.

Minister Tkatchenko said the renewed partnership demonstrates the growing trust between the two nations, adding, “South Korea is an important partner and friend, and we will endeavor to ensure stronger working relations into the future.”
