PNG citizens will now have access to two new digital services aimed at easing pressure on passport queues and improving customer experience, following the announcement of an online application tracker and a new electronic identity capture system.

PNG rolls out online passport status tracker and digital ID capture

The Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority (ICSA) confirmed that the Passport Status Online Tracker is now live, allowing applicants to check the progress of their passport 24 hours after lodging their documents. Users can visit the PNG Immigration website and enter their receipt number to see which stage their passport is in and whether it is ready for collection.

According to ICSA, the online tracker is expected to reduce foot traffic at the Passport Office, helping people save time while giving them confidence that their applications are being processed transparently. Officials said the service forms part of the agency’s broader shift toward modern, accessible digital systems.

The second initiative, known as Speed Identity Capture, has already been introduced at the Koitachi House Passport Office in Port Moresby and at the Momase regional office in Lae. Walk-in clients will have their photos and signatures captured electronically, allowing the details to transfer instantly into the processing system.

ICSA said the new technology supports the country’s move from Machine Readable Zone passports to an Electronic Passport (ePassport), which is targeted for rollout by late 2026 once all international and regulatory requirements are met.

The authority also acknowledged the Government and Members of Parliament for passing the Passport Bill 2025, which enables implementation of the ePassport and related digital reforms.
