PNG Economic Stability Questioned as Kramer Challenges Budget Outlook

PNG Shadow Treasurer Bryan Kramer used Parliament’s budget debate to deliver a sharp critique of the Government’s 2026 financial plan, saying the country is being guided by unrealistic expectations. He argued that the budget is built on revenue forecasts that may not be achievable.

He noted that projections for tax increases and State-Owned Enterprise contributions do not match the current performance of many SOEs, which continue to struggle with management and cashflow issues. According to Kramer, such assumptions weaken the foundation of the budget.

He said relying on optimistic figures turns the national budget into a risky document. “A budget must be an honest economic document, not a political speech,” Kramer said.

The Opposition MP warned that PNG is on a “fiscal tight rope,” where even one major setback — whether environmental, economic, or global — could throw off Treasury’s debt-reduction plans.

Kramer said the Government’s excitement over “record budgets” does not reflect the reality facing ordinary households who deal daily with high prices, school fees and transport costs.

“The budget stabilises Treasury while destabilising households,” he said.
