PNG Foreign Affairs Staff Finally Secure Long-Awaited Housing Project

PNG’s Department of Foreign Affairs has taken a major step toward improving staff welfare, launching a long-promised housing scheme that will allow 56 long-serving officers to become homeowners.

The launch took place last Friday, with Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko describing the initiative as a long-overdue reward for officers who have served the country with “honor and dignity,” with some clocking more than 40 years in the department.

“This housing scheme is bulletproof, and no one will be able to take it away from us,” Minister Tkatchenko said as he addressed staff during the ceremony. He said the project had been carefully vetted through all legal and financial channels to ensure it was properly established.

Works will begin shortly as contractor North Build prepares to clear and level the site, followed by road construction, drainage, installation of power and water, and perimeter fencing. All 56 officers have already been allocated Section and Allotment numbers, now progressing through the final stages before titles are issued.

Tkatchenko also thanked the National Housing Commission for partnering with the department, noting that the titles will empower staff to access bank loans and build homes suited to their families’ needs. “It’s about partnership and friendship, putting words into action, making it happen for the well-needed assets for the people. It’s about you owning a house for the future of your family,” he said.

DFA Secretary Elias Wohengu confirmed that the first batch of land titles will be released later this month. He said the project will continue until all staff receive their blocks, adding, “As we begin to implement the PNG Foreign Policy Strategic Partnerships for economic prosperity, we will house our officers in decent homes.”
