PNG Opposition Launches New Accountability Strategy, Says Marape Government Has Failed the People
The Papua New Guinea Opposition says its main responsibility is to speak up for the people and question the actions of the Marape Government. In a strong statement, Opposition leaders said the Government has failed to manage the country properly and has lost the trust of ordinary Papua New Guineans. They claimed several senior officials are facing allegations of misuse of public money, saying these issues are becoming common and are weakening government systems.

They said that while arguments in Parliament may look like normal politics, life outside is getting harder. Many communities continue to face poor health services, underfunded schools and growing law-and-order problems. According to the Opposition, people across the country are frustrated and losing hope because services are not improving.
The Opposition said it will now use a new approach called ESON, based on the Tok Pisin phrase “Em Stret O Nogat?” They explained that every decision made by the Government should be tested against this question — whether it is right, fair, legal, ethical or acceptable. Using this method, the Opposition plans to challenge weak laws, expose corruption, suggest alternative policies and work with churches, unions and civil society groups to push for better governance.
To lead this work, the Opposition has appointed Hon. Keith Iduhu, MP, as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition. They said a strong and united team is needed to confront what they describe as poor policies and aggressive tactics by the current Government. The Opposition says it will present itself as a practical alternative that can address key issues such as youth unemployment, crime and poverty.
The Opposition also warned that the 2027 National General Election may face serious problems if major changes are not made. They said free and fair elections cannot be guaranteed under the current administration and that protecting voters’ rights is essential for the country’s democracy.
Beginning next week, the Opposition will roll out its ESON strategy through planned court challenges and a public campaign targeting Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SARV) and corruption. They say this is necessary to prevent Papua New Guinea from being placed on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list in 2026.
