PNG highlights sustained fight against corruption at global forum

Papua New Guinea has highlighted its ongoing anti-corruption efforts on the international stage, with Minister of State Richard Masere addressing delegates from nearly 200 countries at the UN Convention against Corruption’s 11th Conference of States Parties.

Minister Masere said that corruption poses a major challenge to PNG’s security, stability, and long-term development, and that the government remains committed to confronting it decisively.

The PNG delegation, consisting of government officials, members of civil society, ICAC representatives, and judicial officers, outlined how the country has strengthened collaboration with development partners and international agencies to support anti-corruption initiatives.

“The government has worked closely with non-state actors and international partners to ensure sustained, coordinated efforts against corruption,” Minister Masere said. He added that the Whistle-blower Protection Act is being reviewed to enhance protections for individuals reporting corruption, and that anti-money laundering legislation is being updated to meet global standards.

He further explained that capacity-building programs for integrity institutions and law enforcement agencies have been implemented, and that corruption risk assessments of government agencies and provincial administrations are guiding PNG’s next national anti-corruption strategy.

The Minister welcomed UNODC’s decision to establish an office in PNG, describing it as a boost for regional cooperation and technical support in implementing the UN Convention and its review processes.

UNODC Programme Officer Marie Jane Fatiaki commended PNG’s approach, saying the government’s inclusion of civil society in official delegations demonstrates a commitment to a whole-of-society approach to tackling corruption.
