PNG's SHP Governor William Powi saddened by fire that destroyed Mendi commercial building
Southern Highlands Governor William Powi has expressed sadness following a fire that destroyed a well-known commercial building in Mendi town, leaving several businesses badly affected but with no reports of injuries or loss of life.
The blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning and quickly engulfed the Menduli Limited building, a long-standing commercial property owned by the United Church. The structure, which housed a number of businesses, was completely razed as flames spread rapidly through the complex.

Residents, police and local youths worked together to contain the fire using water trucks and buckets, as the town does not have an operational fire service. Their efforts helped stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, including the town’s only bank.
Several businesses operating from the building lost stock, equipment and property, dealing a major blow to livelihoods and local commerce in the provincial capital.
Governor Powi said while he was relieved that no lives were lost, the destruction of property was heartbreaking for business owners and the wider community.
“This is a painful loss for our people, especially those who have lost their businesses, but we are thankful that no lives were taken,” he said.
