The operation was launched during a parade at Unagi Oval, bringing together officers from NCD and Central Province. The exercise marks the start of intensified patrols and targeted policing aimed at deterring crime during one of the busiest periods of the year.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika said police would increase visibility in known trouble spots, strengthen mobile patrols and work closely with communities to ensure public safety throughout the festive period.
Superintendent Sika said the operation, known as Operation Silver Christmas and New Year, reflects the police commitment to protect lives and property, noting that officers would be expected to maintain discipline and professionalism at all times.
He said the festive season often presents challenges for police, with increased movement of people and heightened social activity, but added that public cooperation would be key to keeping the city safe.
“The uniform you wear represents service and protection, and I expect every officer to uphold that responsibility during this festive period,” Superintendent Sika said.
