The twins had been rushed out of Port Moresby over the weekend, after medical staff at Paradise Private Hospital identified the urgency of the case. They were transported to Sydney by Manalos Aviation as doctors prepared for a life-saving attempt.
Australian surgeons said Tom had very slim chances of survival but agreed to proceed with the seven-hour operation on Sunday morning to give Sawong the best possibility of living. The medical team described the procedure as “one body with two souls entering the theatre.”
Although the boys were successfully separated, doctors confirmed that only Sawong made it through the operation. He remains in critical condition.
Families and supporters in PNG and Australia have been asked to continue offering prayers as the young survivor undergoes round-the-clock care.
