PNG Connectivity Boost as Air Niugini’s A220 Takes Flight Nationwide
PNG’s flag carrier is reshaping air travel across the country with the introduction of its Airbus A220 aircraft, marking a major step forward in passenger comfort and service delivery.
The arrival of three A220-300 jets since September has allowed Air Niugini to strengthen its domestic operations at a time when travel demand is high, particularly as schools reopen and families move across provinces.

Passengers travelling on the new aircraft are noticing immediate differences, from smoother flights to improved cabin space, earning the aircraft a strong following among regular domestic flyers.
Designed with 138 seats, the A220 provides greater capacity than the Fokker aircraft it is phasing out, while offering wider aisles, larger windows and increased overhead storage. Business Class seating has also raised standards on longer routes.
The aircraft currently operates on core domestic routes linking Port Moresby with Lae, Rabaul, Kavieng, Manus Island and Alotau, helping sustain economic activity and essential services in regional PNG.
Operationally, the A220 delivers better fuel efficiency and dependable performance, contributing to more stable schedules and quieter operations across the network.
Air Niugini plans to expand the aircraft’s footprint to Mount Hagen, Wewak and Kimbe as runway upgrades are completed, improving access for Highlands and coastal communities.
Internationally, the A220 will soon operate flights to Cairns before making its debut on the Port Moresby–Sydney route from March 29. Sydney services will increase to three flights weekly, strengthening travel links between PNG and Australia.
