PNG PM Warns Illegal Gun Owners: Surrender Weapons or Face Life Imprisonment
PNG Prime Minister James Marape has issued a final warning to anyone in possession of illegal firearms, urging them to cooperate with authorities or face severe consequences. The Prime Minister said the country is at a critical stage, requiring decisive action to address gun violence and criminal activity.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Mr Marape stressed that intelligence operations have already identified individuals and groups involved in illegal gun hoarding. “If you know you are in possession of an illegal gun, surrender it,” he said.

An amnesty period for voluntary surrender of illegal firearms will be announced soon, with Police Minister and Police Commissioner set to provide the formal details. “We will embrace you during the amnesty period, but once it ends, enforcement will be firm and uncompromising,” Mr Marape said.
The Prime Minister highlighted the work of specialized police intelligence units already operating across the country. “These are not just the mobile squads you see. Special officers are already in place, carrying out their work discreetly,” he said.
Mr Marape emphasized that law enforcement officers will be fully supported while enforcing the law. “My police and my defence will not be blamed for doing their work,” he said.
Warning that gun-related crime will no longer be tolerated, he urged authorities to target known hotspots, adding that the government is committed to restoring public safety nationwide.
The strong message from the Prime Minister signals a firm crackdown on illegal firearms as PNG moves to tackle escalating gun violence and criminal activities.
