PNG Reaffirms One China Policy in Talks With Chinese Envoy

Papua New Guinea has reaffirmed its foreign policy position on China during high-level talks between Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko and Chinese Ambassador His Excellency Yang Xiaoguang in Port Moresby.

The discussions took place during a courtesy visit to the minister’s office, where both sides reviewed bilateral relations ahead of what has been described as a busy diplomatic year for PNG and China.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Elias Wohengu was also present at the meeting, which focused on strengthening cooperation across economic, trade and political areas.

Minister Tkatchenko said China continues to be Papua New Guinea’s biggest partner in trade and economic engagement, and both countries remain committed to expanding cooperation that delivers practical benefits for businesses and communities.

He said preparations are already underway to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between PNG and China in 2026, a milestone expected to be celebrated later this year.

The minister said PNG’s support for the One China Policy remains firm and unchanged, noting that the country’s position on China and Taiwan is clearly outlined in the recently endorsed Foreign Policy White Paper.

Minister Tkatchenko also confirmed that Prime Minister James Marape will attend the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in 2026, which will be hosted by China.

“Our position is clearly set out without fear or favour, and we remain committed to working with China to grow relations and opportunities for our people,” he said.
