The Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition said the decision reflected confidence in local expertise, highlighting Ms McPherson’s years of service to the sport and her commitment to building strong competition structures within PNG.

PNGNRLC Chairman Adrian Chow said the organisation was pleased to see a familiar and respected administrator take charge of the franchise that will represent the country on rugby league’s biggest stage in 2028.

Ms McPherson joined the PNGNRLC Board in 2010 and has since been closely involved in policy direction and competition growth. Her work has supported the continued success of the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup and the launch of the Santos Cup, which provided a national platform for women players.

Her influence also extended to youth development, with PNGNRLC acknowledging her role in establishing the PNG National Youth Competition in 2025 as part of a long-term talent pathway.

Encouraging unity behind the new CEO, PNGNRLC called on supporters, players and administrators across PNG to rally behind the Chiefs, with Mr Chow saying:

“PNGNRLC congratulates Lorna McPherson on her appointment as CEO of PNG Chiefs. With her leadership, strategic vision and management skills, she has contributed greatly to the development of our national men’s and women’s competitions. I am excited that she has the opportunity and responsibility to contribute at a higher level. Her integrity and passion for PNG and grassroots development will be vital for the Chiefs.”
