Prime Minister Marape Moves to Secure 2027 Vote, Promises Orderly PNG Elections

PNG’s preparations for the 2027 National Elections are already underway, with Prime Minister James Marape saying the Government is determined to deliver a credible and secure polling process.

Mr Marape said strengthening election systems had become a national priority, particularly after the challenges experienced during the 2022 elections, which exposed weaknesses in logistics, security and coordination.

He explained that government agencies were now working in partnership with the Electoral Commission and security authorities to support voter registration, ballot delivery, polling operations and counting procedures throughout the country.

According to the Prime Minister, the aim was to safeguard the democratic process by protecting voters, candidates and election officials, while ensuring the people’s choices were respected.

“Our responsibility is not to influence the outcome, but to ensure a peaceful, credible and orderly election where the will of the people is freely expressed and respected,” Mr Marape said.

He also urged Papua New Guineans to contribute positively to nation-building by choosing peace over conflict and resolving disputes through dialogue rather than violence.

“We will refocus and reset with discipline, unity and shared responsibility. Together, we can build a stronger Papua New Guinea; one that honours the sacrifices of the past 50 years and creates opportunities for the next 50,” he said.
