PM Marape Opens Command Centre to Guard PNG’s Marine Wealth

Prime Minister James Marape yesterday launched the National Fisheries Authority’s MCS Command Centre in Daru, a move aimed at tightening surveillance over Papua New Guinea’s extensive ocean territory.

Officials at the event were told the centre will act as the nation’s “eyes on the sea,” using advanced technology to track fishing patterns and vessel movements across PNG waters.

Marape said the focus is on turning policy into tangible results, closing long-standing gaps in the country’s ability to protect marine resources.

The command centre will work alongside patrol vessels and security agencies, allowing officials to detect and respond to illegal fishing activities quickly.

The Prime Minister encouraged lawful investors to support sustainable practices in the sector, ensuring economic benefits reach local landowners and coastal communities.

He praised staff and partners who helped bring the centre to life, saying their work will strengthen the fisheries sector and protect the nation’s maritime resources.

“Come through the front door. Fish properly, invest properly, give back to landowners and the nation, and we will all prosper together,” Mr Marape said.
