PNG Commuters Brace for New Bus and Taxi Fare Increase

Travelling on city buses became more costly for passengers last Friday, with Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) fares now set at K1.20 per trip across all designated urban routes in Papua New Guinea.

The increase of 20 toea from the previous K1 fare was approved by the country’s transport regulators following a routine review of public transport pricing.

Officials said this rise is the first step in a phased adjustment over the next three years, with bus operators set to apply a 20 per cent increase each year until 2028.

Taxi passengers are also feeling the pinch. Trips that cost K20 in 2025 will now be charged at least K23 under the new fare structure.

Authorities explained that future fare adjustments will take into account monthly changes in diesel and petrol prices, as well as fluctuations in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), ensuring transport costs reflect the broader economy.

The new fare framework for PMVs and taxis will be in effect from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030, following the completion of the 2025 fare review.

As commuters adapt to the higher costs, one regular bus rider said, “It’s a bit challenging, but we hope this helps operators stay running and safe on the roads.”
