The students departed this week, lifting the total number of Papua New Guineans currently studying in the US through the foundation to 28.
YEF chief executive officer Pake Misimi Kera announced the latest intake during a press briefing at the foundation’s Port Moresby headquarters, saying the new group would join 21 other PNG students already accommodated through YEF’s US base.
Mr Kera said YEF’s presence on the ground in the United States sets it apart from many education pathway programs, allowing the foundation to directly manage accommodation, student welfare and ongoing mentorship.
He said the mentorship program has played an important role in helping students adjust to academic life, cultural expectations and personal responsibilities while studying abroad.
The foundation offers alternative pathways for Grade 12 school leavers and students already enrolled in tertiary institutions, giving them access to international education options not always available at home.
Despite steady progress, Mr Kera said YEF remains limited by resources and capacity, calling on the Government, businesses and individuals to support the program so more young Papua New Guineans can benefit.
During the event, YEF acknowledged its sponsors and partners, while also expressing sympathy to Isee Investment Ltd and PISGAH Limited following a recent fire in Mendi that destroyed several business premises.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Rhonda Dou thanked YEF for the opportunity and for the values instilled through its leadership, saying the foundation had prepared them not only for study but for life abroad.
“This opportunity has changed our lives, and we are grateful for the guidance and support YEF continues to give us,” she said.
