PNG PM Marape defends Tsak Valley Police Operations, warns communities

PNG Prime Minister James Marape has defended police actions following a dawn raid in Tsak Valley, Enga Province, saying the Government will not retreat in its fight against illegal guns and organised violence.

He said the police operation was carefully planned and based on intelligence, rejecting claims that innocent people were being targeted.

Mr Marape said police officers would not be punished for doing their jobs and confirmed that special forces deployed to violence-prone areas would remain active.

He urged communities to cooperate with police and warned against hostility during operations, saying resistance would be treated seriously.

The Prime Minister said criminals often exploit villages for protection, placing innocent lives in danger when police move in.

He assured the public that the State would take responsibility where innocent people are affected during lawful operations, following investigations.

However, he warned that harbouring criminals or illegal firearms would lead to severe legal consequences, including life imprisonment.

Mr Marape said intelligence gathered by police includes financial trails linking gunmen to sponsors and those who profit from violence.

He said operations would continue in Enga, Southern Highlands, Hela and other identified hotspots until law and order is restored.

“Supporting the police means safer families, safer communities, safer districts and safer provinces,” he said.
