Miss Papua New Guinea, Iampela Popena, delivered a passionate call for youth empowerment during her pre-pageant presentation at the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant 2026 in Fiji. Ms Popena’s presentation focused on actionable support systems that move beyond speeches and promises, calling for practical opportunities that allow young people to thrive. “Empowering our youth is key,” she said confidently. “The future of our Pacific communities depends on how well we guide, support, and inspire the young people of today.”

A central theme of her talk was the need for increased funding and support for youth entrepreneurship. She highlighted how investing in young innovators and aspiring business owners could spark creativity, strengthen communities, and drive economic growth throughout the region.

Her presentation was met with applause and recognition, as it marked the beginning of the official judging rounds in the prestigious pageant.

Wearing a bold black tribal-inspired PNG outfit and a Bird of Paradise wig, Ms Popena brought Papua New Guinea’s culture and heritage to life on the stage. The dramatic ensemble mirrored her message of pride, ambition, and forward-thinking advocacy.

As the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant unfolds, her advocacy for youth has already distinguished her as a strong voice for meaningful development across the Pacific.

“Young people need opportunities to engage meaningfully, to be reminded of their purpose and potential, and to have access to real support systems,” she concluded.
