PNG TVET Institutions to Gain International Accreditation Support
Papua New Guinea has formalized a strategic collaboration with the Asia Pacific Accreditation and Certification Commission (APACC) to advance the quality of its technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector. The partnership was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) this week.
The MOU represents an important milestone in PNG’s education reforms, providing a framework for program recognition and institutional accreditation at both regional and international levels. It is part of ongoing efforts to align the country’s TVET system with globally recognized standards.
Dr. Uke Kombra, Secretary for Education, said the agreement will increase confidence in PNG’s TVET institutions while improving employment prospects for graduates. “This partnership ensures that our qualifications are credible and competitive internationally. It provides opportunities for students to access work and training opportunities across the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.
APACC will assist PNG by providing technical support in accreditation systems, institutional assessment, and capacity development. The partnership will enhance program quality, strengthen governance, and support the implementation of the National Education Plan 2020–2029 and the 1-6-6 education reforms.
Dr. Kombra emphasized that the reforms focus on equipping students with practical skills relevant to industry needs, enabling them to participate effectively in national development projects and entrepreneurial ventures.
The Secretary also praised Mr. Wilson Garu, First Assistant Secretary of the TVET Division, for his leadership in coordinating the engagement and laying the groundwork for the MOU.
Dr. Kombra said the Department of Education is committed to working closely with APACC, provincial administrations, and TVET institutions to ensure effective implementation and sustainable improvements for PNG’s TVET sector.
