PNG Chinese Business Houses Donate Riot Vehicles to NCD Police

Papua New Guinea’s Chinese business community in the National Capital District has been applauded by police for donating two riot vehicles to support law enforcement operations in PNG’s busiest urban centre.

The acknowledgement was made by NCD and Central Provinces Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Turi, during the graduation ceremony of 66 officers who completed riot response training over the past week.

Commander Turi said the assistance from business houses within the city reflects strong community support for policing efforts and will help officers operate more efficiently in maintaining peace and order.

He pointed out that the donation comes at a crucial time, recalling the January 10, 2024 unrest when police were overwhelmed by looters who burned and ransacked shops across parts of the capital. He said better equipment and specialised training would now strengthen operational readiness.

According to him, the newly acquired vehicles, protective helmets and other riot gear will enhance the police’s ability to respond to public disorder incidents as the city’s population continues to grow rapidly.

He also recognised NCD political leaders for their consistent backing of police operations, which he said had contributed to ongoing crime prevention efforts throughout the city.

Commander Turi further praised the training program initiated by Director Reservist Chief Inspector Ruben Giusu and thanked Assistant Commissioner of Police Training Silva Sika and his instructors for delivering the intensive course.

At the ceremony, ACP Logistics Chris Smith presented a Toyota Land Cruiser to police reservists, commending them for their dedication and visibility in policing duties, especially during late hours at various stations.

“They deserve logistics and training because they are part of the frontline policing team,” he said.
