Prime Minister James Marape said interest from UAE-based airlines has emerged following bilateral discussions held during his official visit to Dubai, where aviation cooperation formed part of broader economic talks.
Addressing journalists at his Melanesian Haus office, Mr Marape said his Government is now working to formalise air services arrangements that would allow direct flights between Dubai and PNG’s capital.
He said the potential entry of a UAE carrier mirrors PNG’s existing aviation partnerships, including services operated by China Southern Airlines.
According to the Prime Minister, opening PNG’s airspace to more international airlines is part of a long-term plan to strengthen the country’s links to major transport and trade corridors.
Mr Marape said Dubai’s role as a major global hub would significantly enhance PNG’s access to key international markets, benefiting tourism, commerce and investment.
“One of the UAE airlines could fly directly to Port Moresby, creating direct connectivity between PNG and one of the world’s biggest aviation hubs,” he said.
“We will now instruct the appropriate ministers and agencies to consolidate air services agreements in due course,” Prime Minister Marape told media.
