The late Michael Thomas Somare is widely recognised as the chief architect of Papua New Guinea’s independence in 1975 and the country’s first Prime Minister. His leadership laid the political and moral foundation of the nation, promoting unity in diversity and championing democratic governance during a critical period in the country’s history.

Paying tribute to his enduring legacy, Western Pacific University (WPU) acknowledged that Sir Michael’s vision for independence and education made institutions such as WPU possible. WPU President Professor Dr. Janet Bulumaris Rangou affirmed the University’s commitment to preparing young Papua New Guineans for the next 50 years in line with his legacy. “Western Pacific University exists because of leaders like Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, who believed in the power of education to transform our nation. Our mission is to equip future generations with the skills, values, and global competence needed to serve Papua New Guinea while remaining grounded in our national identity,” she said.

The WPU Student Representative Council also recognised his lasting influence on young leaders. Student leader Avaneesh Oti said, “Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare's leadership reminds us that true leadership is about service, integrity, and responsibility. His example inspires me to advocate for students and contribute positively to our university and country.” Embracing his legacy, WPU continues to integrate civic and leadership education across its academic programs, student initiatives, and community partnerships, ensuring graduates are both job-ready and nation-ready while upholding the values of unity and service embraced by the nation’s founding fathers.

Meanwhile, Kina Bank also paid tribute, stating: “Today we honor the legacy of the father of our nation, the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare. Today we reflect on his vision, leadership, and service to Papua New Guinea.” As the country observes this national day of remembrance, citizens are encouraged to reflect on his passion for nation-building and renew their commitment to the ideals he championed — Pro Deo et Patria (For God and Country).
