PNG Chiefs Secure Top Coach Ahead of NRL Entry

Papua New Guinea’s push into the National Rugby League has taken a major step forward, with Willie Peters confirmed as the first-ever head coach of the PNG Chiefs ahead of their 2028 debut.

The appointment signals strong intent from the new franchise, as PNG prepares to establish itself in Australia’s premier rugby league competition with a highly experienced figure at the helm.

Peters arrives with a growing reputation as one of the game’s leading coaches, fresh from a historic season in England where he guided Hull Kingston Rovers to an unprecedented clean sweep of titles — winning the Super League Grand Final, Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield.

Before rising through the coaching ranks, Peters built his playing career as a halfback, representing clubs in both Australia and England, including South Sydney, St George Illawarra, Wigan, Widnes and Gateshead.

He later transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant at Manly, South Sydney and the Newcastle Knights before taking charge of Hull KR in 2022, where he quickly made an impact by leading the club to a Challenge Cup Final.

The following year, he steered the side into the Super League Grand Final, narrowly missing out on the title, before returning in dominant fashion last season to claim all major honours and further cement his credentials.

PNG Chiefs General Manager of Football Michael Chammas said the decision to appoint Peters was crucial to shaping the club’s future.

“This is one of the most important decisions we will make as a franchise. Willie wasn't just available - he was in demand. The fact that he chose the PNG Chiefs, chose this challenge, and chose this country says everything about the kind of man and coach he is,” Chammas said.

Peters said the opportunity to lead PNG’s entry into the NRL carries significance beyond the sport itself.

“I believe that what we build with the PNG Chiefs can change the lives of Papua New Guineans for generations to come. Not many coaches get an opportunity like that. This opportunity transcends rugby league,” he said.
