Speaking during a special gathering at Ukarumpa in the Aiyura Valley, Eastern Highlands Province, on Saturday evening, Mr Marape acknowledged the organisation’s long-standing contribution to communities across the country.
He said SIL’s work over the past 70 years had reached remote parts of PNG, delivering Bible translation, education, and literacy programmes that have positively influenced many lives.
Mr Marape highlighted the organisation’s early beginnings in 1956, noting that it worked with 30 languages within its first five years of operation.
Today, SIL is engaged with more than 135 languages nationwide and has contributed to linguistic development in over 400 of PNG’s estimated 840 languages.
The Prime Minister said the organisation’s efforts in translating Scripture into local languages have allowed communities to connect with the Word of God in their mother tongues.
“This is not just translation—it is transformation. It is about people knowing and living God’s Word, leading to changed lives and stronger communities,” he said.
Mr Marape also acknowledged SIL’s role in preserving culture through documentation of traditional stories, songs, and language materials, which has strengthened communication and identity.
He added that training programmes conducted by SIL have empowered Papua New Guineans with skills in literacy and translation, benefiting communities across the country.
“In a land of great diversity, it is the Word of God that unites us. Beyond our tribal and cultural differences, we find common ground in faith,” he said.
Mr Marape reaffirmed PNG’s Christian identity, stating that the nation continues to recognise its spiritual foundation while respecting religious freedoms.
“We proudly declare our affinity with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, while respecting the rights of all citizens to practise their faith,” he said.
The Prime Minister also thanked expatriate missionaries and international partners for their commitment, saying their contributions have been a blessing to the nation.
“From the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of our nation, I say thank you. You have never been a burden to our country—you have been a blessing.”
