PNG Defence Officials Promise Action Over Questioned Recruitment Process
Papua New Guinea Defence authorities have assured the public that strict action will be taken against any irregularities discovered in the latest recruitment intake.
Deputy Chief Brigadier General Lari Opa said investigations would focus on claims that some recruits who failed medical assessments were nonetheless admitted into training.

He stated that those identified would be removed through an internal review, while any serving personnel linked to the matter would face disciplinary action.
The response follows widespread discussion online, where videos of training exercises triggered criticism and allegations that some recruits did not meet eligibility requirements.
Brig Gen Opa said the inquiry would closely examine recruitment systems, including how decisions were made, the authenticity of submitted documents, and the adequacy of oversight.
He also revealed that the Defence Force is considering new approaches, including a proposal by Prime Minister James Marape to recruit directly from schools in consultation with education authorities.
“If there are recruits who do not meet the high standards I can assure you they will not graduate,” he said.
“Our training establishments, including Goldie River Training Depot and all PNGDF bases, provide rigorous physical, mental, and character-based assessments.”
