According to reports first published by Code Sports, the three-time premiership winner is being considered as a marquee player who could headline the club’s inaugural squad.

Luai, who currently plays for the Wests Tigers, holds a player option in his contract for the 2027 season. He is required to decide by Thursday, April 30, whether to activate the one-year extension.

Although he remains committed to the Tigers through the 2026 season, his presence in Port Moresby over the weekend has fueled speculation about a long-term move away from Sydney. It is understood the Tigers were informed of the visit, which included facility tours and high-level discussions with Chiefs management, including CEO Lorna McPherson.

Should the deal eventuate, Luai is expected to become the face of the new franchise, providing immediate credibility as the club prepares for its debut season.

Industry sources indicate that a move to Papua New Guinea could offer financial incentives, including potential tax advantages under an Australian Government-backed funding package aimed at supporting the new franchise.

With recruitment underway, securing a high-profile player like Luai is seen as a crucial step in attracting other elite talent to the Pacific-based team.

While neither the Chiefs nor the Wests Tigers have released an official statement, the developments suggest growing momentum behind Luai’s possible move, with attention now turning to the upcoming contract deadline.
