The discussions took place as PNG continues to commemorate 50 years of independence, a period Governor Parkop described as an opportunity to redefine the country’s development path and social priorities.
Welcoming Diene Keita, Parkop acknowledged the role of UNFPA in supporting initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women, particularly through programs aligned with the Amazing Port Moresby 2030 vision.
He said the government has taken decisive steps to combat Gender-Based Violence through policy reforms, institutional mechanisms and funding commitments, including K180 million set aside for implementation of the national strategy.
Parkop emphasised that real change must occur at community level, urging authorities to translate policies into action across districts and provinces. He added that economic empowerment for women and youth is a vital part of the solution.
According to the governor, development should not only be measured by economic growth but also by dignity, opportunity and inclusion, ensuring that women and marginalised groups have a voice in shaping the nation’s future.
Ms Keita praised PNG’s leadership under James Marape, highlighting the country’s financial commitment to GBV programs as an example for others. “Not only did you launch the National GBV strategy, but you also allocate USD 40 million annually towards implementation. This is unprecedented and a shining example to the world,” she said.
