PNG Bilums Fall Narrowly to New Zealand, Keep World Cup Dream Alive

The Papua New Guinea women's national football team have kept their hopes of a historic FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance alive despite a narrow 1–0 defeat to the New Zealand women's national football team in the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Oceania Qualifiers at North Harbour Stadium.

Papua New Guinea delivered a determined performance but were undone early in the second half when Katie Kitching scored the only goal of the match with a powerful header, sealing qualification for New Zealand.

Despite the loss, the Bilums remain firmly in contention for a place at the 2027 tournament, having secured a spot in the inter-confederation playoffs scheduled for late 2026 and early 2027.

The match began with Papua New Guinea showing strong defensive discipline, frustrating a dominant New Zealand side throughout a tense first half. The Football Ferns created several scoring opportunities, including efforts that struck the post and crossbar, while two goals were ruled out for offside.

Goalkeeper Betty Sam once again stood out for PNG, producing a series of crucial saves to keep the score level. The Bilums also had a rare attacking chance when Keren Kalapai intercepted a loose pass and delivered a dangerous cross, but the opportunity was cleared before it could be converted.

A late first-half penalty initially awarded to New Zealand was overturned after a VAR review, ensuring the teams went into the break locked at 0–0.

New Zealand eventually broke the deadlock shortly after halftime when a well-delivered cross from Gabbie Rennie found Kitching, who headed home to give the hosts the lead.

The Ferns continued to press for more goals, but Papua New Guinea’s defense held firm under pressure, limiting further damage and keeping the contest alive until the final whistle.

While New Zealand celebrate qualification for their seventh FIFA Women’s World Cup, Papua New Guinea can take confidence from their resilient campaign. The Bilums will now turn their focus to the playoffs, where they will have another opportunity to secure their first-ever appearance on the world stage.
