A Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130J Hercules departed Auckland carrying essential relief items to assist communities affected by the cyclone. The supplies, organised through New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, are expected to strengthen ongoing emergency operations in PNG.

Authorities from Papua New Guinea and New Zealand are working closely to ensure the safe and efficient distribution of aid to the worst-hit areas.

Meanwhile, additional support arrived earlier with the Royal New Zealand Navy vessel HMNZS Canterbury, which transported helicopters, aircrew and specialised response personnel into Port Moresby.

The deployment includes two NH90 helicopters and members of the New Zealand Defence Force’s Deployable Joint Interagency Task Force, who are trained to respond to complex emergency situations alongside partner nations.

The visiting personnel are expected to remain in PNG for up to three weeks, working alongside the Papua New Guinea Defence Force and government agencies to improve coordination and strengthen joint response capabilities.

Commander Joint Forces New Zealand Major General Rob Krushka said the mission was an opportunity to reinforce cooperation between the two countries. “As a Pacific nation, New Zealand has a shared commitment to humanitarian aid and disaster responses, and regional security,” he said.
