PNG Chiefs Secures Jerome Luai in Landmark NRL Expansion Signing
Papua New Guinea has landed one of the biggest names in rugby league, with Jarome Luai committing to join the country’s incoming NRL franchise, delivering a major boost to PNG’s long-awaited entry into the competition.
The Wests Tigers playmaker is expected to remain in Australia through the 2027 season before making the switch to the PNG-based side when it enters the league in 2028, following reports that he has exercised a clause in his current deal.

Luai reportedly informed teammates of his decision during a training session earlier this week, bringing clarity to months of speculation surrounding his future.
The move comes at a time when the Tigers are enjoying a strong campaign under coach Benji Marshall, sitting among the top teams on the ladder, making the announcement a setback for the club’s resurgence.
Over the weekend, Luai travelled to Papua New Guinea where he met senior officials, including Prime Minister James Marape, before confirming his long-term playing plans.
Financial incentives are understood to have played a key role, with reports indicating players joining the PNG franchise will benefit from tax-free earnings, significantly increasing their take-home pay compared to contracts offered by Australian clubs.
Prime Minister Marape welcomed the development, saying Luai’s visit reflected growing confidence in PNG’s NRL ambitions. “To have a player of Jarome Luai’s calibre visit our country, experience our culture, meet our people, and see what Papua New Guinea has to offer is heartwarming for our nation,” he said.
