PNG Defence Force Cancels 2026 Recruitment Intake Amid System Overhaul

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force has scrapped its first recruitment intake for this year as part of a wider shake-up of its selection processes, following controversy surrounding alleged political interference.

PNGDF Commander Rear Admiral Philip Polewara confirmed the decision, saying the recruitment directorate has also been dissolved while a full review of the system is carried out.

The move comes in the wake of claims that Defence Minister Dr Billy Joseph was linked to irregularities in the recruitment exercise, prompting him to step aside to allow investigations to proceed independently.

Rear Admiral Polewara said Brigadier Lari Opa, the deputy commander, has been tasked to lead the review team now that the recruitment office has been shut down.

He indicated that the current structure would be replaced entirely, although recruitment functions will continue under a new arrangement aimed at restoring credibility and efficiency.

The PNGDF is now considering reverting to a system that works closely with the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, allowing Grade 12 students to apply through the national school leavers process.

Polewara said earlier attempts to centralise recruitment at Murray Barracks had not delivered the desired results, adding that the proposed shift would strengthen quality control already established through the education system. “We will have to get rid of it and put in new systems but the function will remain,” he said.
