PNG Defence Minister Steps Aside Amid Recruitment Controversy

Papua New Guinea Defence Minister Dr Billy Joseph has temporarily stepped down from his role as scrutiny intensifies over allegations linked to recruitment within the PNG Defence Force (PNGDF).

Announcing his decision at a media briefing, Dr Joseph clarified that enlistment into the PNGDF follows strict internal procedures managed solely by the military command, stressing that political leaders and civilian authorities have no role in the process.

He expressed concern over claims circulating on social media, describing them as misleading attempts to politicise recruitment and discredit the leadership of the Defence Force, including the Commander.

The Minister also condemned the unauthorised recording and distribution of footage allegedly involving the intimidation of recruits, calling it a serious violation of military standards and professional conduct.

He confirmed that concerns raised in Parliament have prompted a formal directive for the Defence Council to undertake a comprehensive inquiry, with the outcome to be released publicly once completed.

Dr Joseph said stepping aside from his ministerial duties and his position as Chairman of the Defence Council would ensure the investigation proceeds without interference and maintains public confidence.

In addressing his electorate of Nipa Kutubu and the wider public, he appealed for understanding, urging citizens to respect the independence and integrity of the PNGDF during the review process.

“My decision to step aside allows the Prime Minister to thoroughly review the allegations and take any necessary remedial actions to maintain continuity and integrity within the PNGDF,” he stated.
