PNG Launches First Sovereign AI Data Centre to Boost Digital Growth

The rollout of Papua New Guinea’s first Sovereign AI Data Centre signals a major advancement in the country’s push toward digital independence, with Telikom Limited leading the initiative.

The new facility ensures that key national data is stored within PNG, reducing reliance on foreign infrastructure and strengthening control over sensitive information.

Speaking during the launch, Telikom CEO Amos Tepi said the project represents a bold step in building the nation’s technological capacity.

“This is about sovereignty, security, and building national capability. For many years, much of our data has been stored offshore, meaning our systems and services relied on infrastructure beyond our control. Today, that changes,” he said.

The data centre is set to play a central role in supporting PNG’s digital economy by providing modern infrastructure for both government and private sector use.

It features secure local data storage, flexible hybrid systems and an advanced artificial intelligence platform that allows businesses and institutions to develop customised digital solutions locally.

The initiative complements the Government’s digital transformation efforts, particularly in areas such as secure online services, identity systems and improved data management.

Through partnerships with Datec PNG, CloudSigma and Docu Consultants, the project blends international technology expertise with local development goals.

Mr Tepi said the launch demonstrates PNG’s readiness to participate in the global digital economy and embrace emerging technologies like AI.

“AI is transforming the world. To truly benefit from it, we must have control over our data and infrastructure. With this platform, PNG moves from dependency to capability,” he said.

“This is more than a project—it is a statement. A statement that Papua New Guinea is ready. Your Data. Our Soil. Unlimited Opportunities.”
