PNG PM Urges Immediate Pause on Evictions in NCD

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has appealed for a temporary halt to eviction operations underway in parts of the National Capital District, calling for a more humane and coordinated approach as authorities work towards lasting solutions.

He said reports had reached his office about forced removals being executed under court directives and urged those involved to exercise restraint while the Government assesses the situation.

“I respectfully ask all those in possession of court orders for eviction to slow down the process. Let us allow both the National Government and the NCD authorities the time and space to find proper, humane, and lasting solutions for our people,” he said.

Mr Marape acknowledged that many settlers lacked formal land ownership but stressed that their presence in the city reflected deeper social and economic pressures, particularly rural-urban migration.

He noted that people move into urban centres seeking better livelihoods and should be treated with dignity despite the legal complexities surrounding settlement areas.

The Prime Minister also revealed that some eviction exercises had been carried out without sufficient government awareness, highlighting the need for better coordination among all stakeholders.

“Our message is clear — slow down the evictions, allow Government to step in, and let us work together to find orderly, fair, and lasting solutions for all parties involved,” Mr Marape said.
