PNG PM Oversees Defence as Recruitment Investigation Proceeds
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has assumed direct authority over the Defence portfolio as scrutiny intensifies over recruitment practices within the military.
He announced that Dr Billy Joseph will not be involved in Defence matters for now, as the government awaits the outcome of an official investigation.

“In the meantime, Minister Billy has nothing whatsoever to do with the Defence portfolio,” Mr Marape said.
The Prime Minister noted that his temporary oversight will continue until a comprehensive report is submitted, which will guide the next course of action.
“Defence comes under my watch until such time we receive the full report. Subject to the outcome of the investigation, I will then decide what steps to take next,” he stated.
Dr Joseph, however, will remain responsible for other sectors including disaster services, emergency operations, fire services and volunteer programs.
Mr Marape emphasised that although grouped for administrative convenience, these sectors operate independently with distinct roles.
He further revealed that investigations into recruitment within the Papua New Guinea Defence Force have already begun.
“The investigation has started, and those involved in the selection process will be required to appear before investigators,” he said.
