National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab praised the joint efforts of police officers and the Road Traffic Authority for removing defective vehicles from city streets. “These vehicles were spotted around the city, and in some cases, drivers tried to flee, leaving the cars behind. Our tow trucks assisted in securing them,” he said.

The operation has so far seen 22 PMV buses, nine taxis, and eight private vehicles impounded. Superintendent Simatab said the initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and reduce accidents in Port Moresby.

He urged all vehicle owners to ensure their cars are roadworthy before taking them out. “If you are caught violating traffic laws, you will be arrested and charged. Vehicles may be impounded until they are repaired,” Simatab said.

The Superintendent also warned that enforcement agencies will continue monitoring streets and impounding vehicles that do not meet safety standards. He called on owners to inspect their vehicles before putting them on hire or driving on public roads to avoid penalties.

“Drive safe, keep your vehicles in proper condition, and help us make the city streets safer for everyone,” Simatab added.
