PNG Police to Receive Staged Pay Rise Over Three Years

Papua New Guinea police officers are set to benefit from a phased salary increase over the next three years, with Police Commissioner David Manning confirming the adjustment will begin later this year.

The pay review, approved through the Department of Personnel Management, will see officers across different ranks receive varying increments as part of efforts to improve welfare within the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC).

Commissioner Manning said constables and senior constables would receive an average increase of three per cent annually, while those from sergeant up to divisional commander level would get about two per cent each year. Officers above that rank bracket are expected to receive 1.8 per cent per annum.

He described the adjustment as recognition for officers who continue to perform their duties under demanding and often dangerous conditions.

The Police Commissioner also revealed that talks are continuing with relevant authorities on the possibility of increasing pension rates for retired members.

Mr Manning said improving conditions for both serving and former officers remains a key focus for the police force and the Government.

He said negotiations for the salary adjustment took more than a year to complete and urged officers to remain patient while funding is finalised by Treasury and formal processes are completed by Personnel Management.

Mr Manning added that the pay rise forms part of broader reforms, including ongoing upgrades to police housing and infrastructure, as authorities work to rebuild the force.

He said the Constabulary has undergone major changes in recent years, pointing to improved discipline, professionalism and commitment among officers.

The Commissioner further highlighted that 727 recruits have graduated from the Bomana Centre for Excellence since 2024 and are now deployed across the country, with another intake of more than 700 recruits commencing training this week.

“Enhancing the welfare of those who serve our communities with pride and professionalism is at the forefront of our works to rebuild the RPNGC.”
