PNG Targets Stronger China Trade Through Guangdong Partnership
A new push to expand Papua New Guinea’s presence in the Chinese market will centre on closer cooperation with Guangdong Province, Prime Minister James Marape says.
Mr Marape made the remarks before leaving for China, explaining that the initiative stems from earlier high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He said President Xi had previously outlined that PNG would engage directly with Guangdong as part of efforts to strengthen economic collaboration.
The Prime Minister said his visit will prioritise trade growth and investment opportunities, particularly in ensuring Papua New Guinea exports gain better entry into the vast Chinese market.
He emphasised the need for mutual benefit, noting that PNG is seeking a more balanced trading relationship where both nations gain fairly.
Guangdong Province, widely regarded as one of China’s economic engines, has a population exceeding 120 million and plays a central role in global manufacturing and exports.
Mr Marape highlighted that the province’s economic strength rivals that of major global economies and includes Shenzhen, a key innovation and industrial hub.
He said the trip goes beyond a provincial engagement and reflects PNG’s broader strategy to strengthen bilateral ties with China.
China continues to dominate as Papua New Guinea’s leading trading partner, particularly through the purchase of LNG and mineral resources.
Mr Marape also acknowledged recent improvements in export standards, which have enabled more PNG agricultural products to enter China.
“Our coffee, cocoa, copra, oil palm, vanilla and other agricultural products can now access the Chinese market,” he said.
