PNG Tokua Airport Reopens After Flooding Forces Temporary Shutdown
Flights at PNG’s Tokua Airport resumed on Sunday afternoon after authorities lifted restrictions imposed earlier due to flooding caused by heavy rain.
The National Airports Corporation said the airport was closed after persistent rainfall since Saturday led to water runoff from surrounding areas, leaving parts of the runway and taxiway submerged.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued in the morning to suspend operations while conditions were assessed and safety checks carried out.
Following a thorough inspection later in the day, NAC confirmed that both the runway and taxiway were safe, allowing normal services to recommence at 1:30pm.
Airport officials monitored the situation throughout the day as water levels receded and conditions improved.
NAC thanked airline operators, passengers and the public for their patience during the disruption.
“Safety remains our highest priority,” the corporation said.
