Feo Announces New Medical University Investments to Tackle PNG Health Crisis
Minister for Higher Education Kinoka Feo has announced major government investments into Papua New Guinea’s medical training sector as part of efforts to address critical shortages in the country’s health workforce.
Speaking at the commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife 2026, Minister Feo paid tribute to midwives and healthcare workers for their continued service despite ongoing challenges in the sector.
The Minister, who had just returned from overseas travel, told attendees he made it a priority to personally thank health workers for their commitment to saving lives and caring for families across the country.
“You do an amazing job caring for our mothers, our wives, and our babies. Your work does not go unnoticed,” he said.
Feo acknowledged that many frontline workers continue to serve in difficult conditions, often in health facilities facing shortages of staff, equipment, and resources.
Drawing from personal experiences, the Minister said he deeply respected the work of nurses and midwives, particularly those involved in maternal and child healthcare.
He said the government had become increasingly concerned after reviewing national workforce statistics, which revealed a severe shortage of qualified health professionals nationwide.
“When I saw the statistics, I was shocked by the shortage we have. We need to produce thousands more health workers to meet the country’s needs,” Feo said.
As part of the government’s response, he announced plans to strengthen and expand a new medical university that will help increase the training of doctors, nurses, and midwives.
The Minister confirmed that funding support has already been allocated by government, while further financial assistance is also being pursued through the Asian Development Bank and other development partners.
He said the investments would support new infrastructure, additional lecturers, and larger student enrolments aimed at building a stronger and more sustainable healthcare workforce for Papua New Guinea.
Feo concluded by thanking healthcare workers for their dedication and compassion, saying their contribution remains vital to improving healthcare outcomes throughout the country.
