Prime Minister Marape said Papua New Guinea respects the democratic decision made by the Solomon Islands Parliament and is ready to continue strengthening relations between the two neighbouring Melanesian nations.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea, I convey my sincere congratulations to Prime Minister Matthew Wale on his successful election as Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands,” Mr Marape said.
He said PNG and the Solomon Islands have long shared historical and cultural connections and would continue to work together on issues affecting the Pacific region.
Mr Marape said both countries would maintain cooperation in areas including trade, fisheries, education, security, labour mobility and infrastructure development. He added that regional unity and stronger economic ties remained important priorities for both governments.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the contribution of outgoing leader Jeremiah Manele, thanking him for the cooperation shared with Papua New Guinea during his term in office.
“Our countries have stood together over many decades, and we will continue to build on that relationship for the benefit of our peoples and the wider Pacific region,” he said.
