PNG PM Marape Rejects Player Poaching Claims Over Chiefs Talks

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has brushed aside claims that he attempted to lure overseas players to join the proposed PNG Chiefs rugby league team, insisting his discussions were about promoting the country rather than recruiting athletes.

He clarified that his engagement with visiting Brisbane Broncos players during their tour last year focused on showcasing Papua New Guinea and outlining the vision behind the Chiefs franchise.

Mr Marape described himself as the country’s leading advocate, saying his role includes promoting investment and national initiatives, including sport. He said rugby league remains a powerful platform to unite Papua New Guinea’s diverse population under one banner.

“I am my country’s number one pitch man… the rugby league team we are putting up is one of the greatest tools to anchor our country,” he said.

The Prime Minister stressed that no player was approached to break existing contracts, explaining that discussions were limited to lifestyle, opportunities and the long-term vision for the team.

“They complimented Chiefs but we never ask them, ‘break your contract and come and join us,’” he said.

Mr Marape welcomed the signing of Jerome Luai, describing it as a milestone that goes beyond sport, highlighting the player’s role in shaping the identity of the team.

“He picked to be our foundational player… it’s bigger than rugby league. It’s to unify the most diverse nation on earth behind one team.”

Responding to criticism over his meeting with Luai, Mr Marape said he attended in his capacity as a supporter of the franchise and left the final decision entirely to the player and his management.

“Jerome was never forced… we said ‘up to you, you decide.’”

He also addressed reports about tax-free incentives, clarifying that such measures are offered by the PNG Government and not the National Rugby League.

“The tax incentive is a PNG government incentive… don’t blame the National Rugby League,” he said.

Mr Marape urged local players, including those in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup and SP Hunters squad, to raise their standards as they remain central to the Chiefs’ long-term development.

“I want to say, you all have to step up if you want to get into Chiefs… I’m watching,” he said.
