He told participants that PNG’s progress has been shaped by local action and determination, rather than external direction, emphasising that change began within communities and grew into a national movement.

The Governor pointed to early activities held in Port Moresby during key national and international observances, where awareness campaigns were linked with practical programs promoting health and active living.

Through the Active City Development Program, he said communities were mobilised to turn advocacy into tangible action, building momentum at the grassroots level.

As gender-based violence escalated, this movement evolved into the Parliamentary Coalition Against GBV, which later secured the formation of a Special Parliamentary Committee in the 10th Parliament.

He added that continued pressure and commitment saw the initiative strengthened further in the 11th Parliament with the creation of a permanent committee dedicated to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Governor Parkop highlighted that the initiative reflects PNG’s own response to its challenges, guided by constitutional values and the need to ensure equal participation for all citizens.

He said PNG’s delegation is attending the Women’s Deliver 2026 conference in Melbourne to both contribute its experiences and learn from global counterparts, stating, “We didn’t wait. We took action. We didn’t ask for permission. We pushed for national change.”
