PNG PM Orders Probe into K20m Defence Deal
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has ordered an immediate review into a reported K20 million transaction involving the PNG Defence Force, directing Chief Secretary Ivan Pomaleo to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The Prime Minister said the issue only came to his attention after it was publicly raised, prompting swift action from his office to establish the facts surrounding the transaction.

“This is the first time I have seen this issue. I have instructed the Chief Secretary to conduct a full review and provide detailed information,” he said.
Mr Marape emphasised that in a democratic system, concerns raised by citizens, public servants, or the Opposition must be taken seriously and examined through proper channels.
“In a democracy, we must allow space for concerns to be raised by the Opposition, public servants, or any citizen. These concerns must then be checked through proper processes,” he said.
At the same time, he cautioned against rushing to conclusions without verified information, warning that unsubstantiated allegations could mislead the public.
“It is irresponsible to make serious allegations without full information. We must allow due process to take its course,” the Prime Minister said.
He reaffirmed his government’s stance against corruption, stressing that all public funds must be managed lawfully and responsibly.
“I do not tolerate corruption. Everyone must do the right thing. Every government fund must be used properly and lawfully. We will make sure all processes are accounted for,” he said.
Mr Marape added that independent bodies such as the Independent Commission Against Corruption and the Ombudsman Commission remain key to ensuring accountability.
“These matters can be referred to institutions like the Independent Commission Against Corruption and the Ombudsman Commission. They are there to ensure accountability,” he said.
He assured the country that any proven wrongdoing would be dealt with under the law and pledged to update the nation once the review is complete.
“If there is any wrongdoing, action will be taken. No one is above the law. I will inform the country when I receive the full report. Transparency and accountability remain important,” he said.
