PNG Rural Communities to Benefit from US Internet Funding

REMOTE communities across Papua New Guinea could soon have better internet access after the United States Government announced plans to provide US$30 million for satellite connectivity projects in the country.

The funding will target essential services including schools, health facilities and disaster centres located in hard-to-reach areas.

Acting Information and Communications Technology Minister Hon. Peter L. Tsiamalili Jr. welcomed the support, saying it would help address long-standing communication challenges affecting rural communities.

The announcement came after the second United States–Papua New Guinea Strategic Partnership Dialogue between the two countries.

“I welcome the announcement by the Government of the United States of America of its intention to provide US$30 million for satellite internet connectivity in Papua New Guinea,” Mr Tsiamalili said.

He said satellite technology offered a practical solution for many parts of PNG where internet infrastructure remains limited due to difficult geography and high operational costs.

“This is a timely and practical commitment. For Papua New Guinea, satellite internet can help bridge the connectivity gap for rural and remote communities where geography, cost and infrastructure challenges remain significant,” he said.

The ICT Ministry said improved connectivity would create better access to education, healthcare services, economic activities and information for people living in remote parts of the country.
