The announcement was made by Prime Minister James Marape during the opening of the Sixth Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers Meeting in Port Moresby on Wednesday, where Pacific leaders and officials gathered to discuss regional energy and transport priorities.
The week-long meeting is being attended by Energy and Transport Ministers, senior government officials, development partners and technical experts from across the Pacific region.
Held under the theme “Scaling Connectivity for a Prosperous Blue Pacific,” the forum is focusing on stronger regional cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, resilient transport systems and maritime connectivity.
Prime Minister Marape said PNG would begin implementing its low-carbon transition this year, with the plan continuing through to 2035 as part of a long-term strategy to reduce dependence on imported fuel.
He said the country would make use of its natural renewable resources, including hydro, geothermal, solar, wind and ocean energy, to support future development.
The Prime Minister also revealed that the Government is preparing a national policy to support the introduction of electric vehicles across the country, while discussions are also underway on the gradual use of electrically powered ships and boats.
Mr Marape said the shift would help reduce carbon emissions, improve energy security and shield the economy from fluctuating global fuel prices.
“I propose that this meeting recognises and supports this direction, and that we collectively explore a regional pathway towards electrified transport systems for our Pacific communities,” he said.
