Papua New Guinea’s national women’s rugby league team will be guided by a seasoned NRLW coach after Craig Sandercock was confirmed as the new head coach of the PNG Orchids.

The announcement by the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League signals a major step in strengthening the side ahead of the Rugby League World Cup, with Sandercock set to bring top-level expertise into the national setup.

Currently coaching the Wests Tigers in the NRLW, Sandercock has built a reputation across several elite competitions, including stints with the Newcastle Knights and Manly Sea Eagles, as well as England’s Hull KR in the Super League.

His coaching journey has also extended into development pathways, notably helping shape the Canterbury Bulldogs women’s side before their entry into the NRLW in 2025.

PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka welcomed the appointment, describing it as a boost for women’s rugby league in the country.

“Craig’s experience in the NRLW competition, coupled with his background in the Super League, makes him the ideal candidate to take the Orchids to the next level,” he said.

“His commitment to developing players and building a strong team culture aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of women’s rugby league in PNG.”

Sandercock said he was looking forward to the challenge and reconnecting with a country that holds personal significance.

“I am impressed by the potential of the local players — their natural talent, athleticism, and passion for rugby league are outstanding,” he said.

“I look forward to working with all the players to harness that potential, build a competitive squad, and prepare strongly for the World Cup.”
