PNG Chiefs Secure England International Matty Lees for 2028 NRL Campaign

Papua New Guinea's push towards its historic entry into the National Rugby League has gathered further momentum with the signing of English international forward Matty Lees, adding more experience and leadership to the PNG Chiefs' foundation squad.

The acquisition sees Lees become Player 004 for the franchise as preparations continue for the club's inaugural NRL season in 2028. Club officials believe the highly-rated front-rower will play a key role in helping shape the team's culture and standards during its formative years.

Lees arrives with an impressive rugby league resume, having featured in more than 170 professional matches and collected multiple Super League premiership titles during his time with St Helens. He has also represented England on the international stage.

PNG Chiefs General Manager Football Michael Chammas said the club was pleased to secure a player widely recognised for his toughness and consistency.

Chammas said Lees had built a strong reputation through dedication and a relentless work ethic, qualities the club wanted as it assembled its roster for the future.

He said the experienced forward would contribute strongly both on the field and within the wider playing group as the Chiefs continue building towards their NRL debut.

Chief Executive Officer Lorna McPherson said the club's recruitment strategy extended beyond playing ability, with equal emphasis placed on character and professionalism.

She said Lees had earned widespread respect throughout his career and would play an important role in helping establish the values and identity of the new franchise.

"As we continue building the PNG Chiefs, we're focused on bringing in quality people as much as quality players.

"Matty has earned enormous respect throughout his career through his professionalism, humility and commitment to his team.

"As Player 004, he becomes part of the foundation group that will help establish the standards and identity of our club for years to come."
